Mediterranean Spain Spain's Mediterranean coast boasts hundreds of miles of beaches, scores of small resort villages and a number of international destinations that bring in millions of holiday-makers a year. It extends from the French border all the way to the Straits of Gibraltar, and covers the entire eastern portion of that coast. This area of Spain is comprised of three autonomous regions: Cataluņa, Comunidad Valenciana and Murcia. Hidden behind the sun and fun, the sea and sand, are some of Spain's best-kept secrets, including castles, monasteries, and mountains edging into the sky. The Mediterranean coast is also home to Spain's second- and third-largest cities, Barcelona and Valencia. Lesser known cities have ancient walls, arches and theaters displaying their legacy as great capitals in the Roman empire, as well as Greek and Carthaginian remains. Intact Jewish neighborhoods, Moorish architecture, and the ever-present medieval Gothic quarters are found in towns on the coast or in cities and villages just inland, where many beachgoers never venture.
